Needle Needs…

Need a needle case? Don’t wanna fork out for some chintzy rag? Make your own! Here is a needle roll I made a while back using this pattern I found on the ‘Made by Loulabelle’ blog. It’s easy to make and professional looking – I used some fabric from the Gambia and some left over scraps I’ve been hanging on to since fashion college. I am yet to design a mini version to hold all my DPNs and Knit Pro interchangeables (which came in a yucky, fiddly plastic case)…

Hooray!

Here is a free knitting pattern of my own design for a pair of very simple fingerless mittens (with thumb gusset). I wanted something that was simple, sturdy and practical for riding my bike in cold weather. After searching high and low for the perfect patten I blew caution to the wind and decided to make my own pattern – my first attempt at designing something with shaping on it. I call them my “Old School” fingerless mittens because, once I had finished making them I noticed they were in the colours of my P.E. kit from primary school :-/ and I suppose they have a retro feel to them.

I knitted them in Drops Lima alapaca blend double knitting yarn on size 3.25 and 3.75mm DPNs. They came perfectly out of just one 50g ball of yarn and for the contrast stripe I used some leftover DK yarn. One thing I will say though, is that because they are knitted in the round the stripe kind of spirals around the mitten – rather then creating a complete “ring” of knitting around the mitten, which is not that desirable but it does not really show too much.

You can download a PDF of the pattern here or if you have a Craftsy account you can get it free over there too >>> “Old School” Fingerless Mittens.
